Dressed in a silver suit with pinstripes, Orson Charles took off his shirt to reveal a Georgia blackout jersey beneath.
Charles signed with the Dawgs over Tennessee and USC, ending Georgia's longest recruiting battle since Herschel Walker, who signed with Georgia in April of 1980. Robert Wiener, Charles' high school coach, admitted it was a long battle and stated that Orson went about it the right way to make the best decision.
Charles got a late start on his recruiting because he transferred to Plant High School in his junior year. After Plant won the state championship in Florida for their division, he turned his attention to the recruiting battle.
Georgia head coach Mark Richt told the media, "We're thrilled to have Orson join our signing class. He comes from a state championship high school team...a team that knows how to win and I'm sure Orson will come in and be ready to compete."
Charles joined Arthur Lynch as the second tight end to commit to Georgia football this recruiting year.
Georgia did have a good chance at getting Charles, as Plant's state championship quarterback, Aaron Murray, committed to Georgia and enrolled early in college. Murray's recent success with Charles probably helped the Dawgs win the recruiting battle.
This huge pickup for our 2009 recruiting class will probably move us up on the top 10 list overall. This is a big commitment from Charles and he will probably help us win some games.
