Before Thursday night, it had been 41 years since Oregon State knocked off a #1 team. Freshman Jacquizz Rodgers led the Beavers as they pulled off a stunner - a 27-21 win over the #1 team in the nation, USC. Rodgers ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Oregon State led 21-0 at halftime and then took advantage of a late turnover to beat the Trojans.
Beaver fans rushed the field when the clock ran out and their 25-point underdog shocked the college football nation with a huge upset over a team that was expected to roll right into the national championship game.
The Beavers also upset USC at Reser Stadium in 2006, when the Trojans where ranked third. The Beavers' lone victory over a #1 team came in 1967, when Oregon State beat the O.J. Simpson-led Trojans 3-0.
Oregon State destroyed USC's hopes of an undefeated season and trip to Miami for the championship. This was also the first time a #1 ranked team has lost on a Thursday.
Without USC to hold the #1 spot, the stage is set for the Georgia-Alabama game in Athens Saturday night. It will be a thriller as Georgia is looking to take USC's place at the top of the polls.
